[Fishing Tips] The 5 essential fishing support tools - FISHING JAPANESE STYLE
What is the essential fishing gear? Hmm. they'll be fishing rods, reels, lines, weights, hooks, baits. Yeah, all of them are essential for fishing.
But in this article, I'd like to focus more on the support tools. We can fish without them, but I do recommend bringing them with you to fish. In the fact, if I have to fish without them, I'll be so nervous and can't focus on fishing. I probably would stop fishing and go home.
Here is the list of my 5 essential fishing support tools.
- Sunglasses and a cap
- Scissors
- A fishing plier
- Gloves
- A fish grip
Yes. We can fish without all the above tools. But.. they're really important and useful. And the fact is "All those items are sort of safety goods protecting you from the potential incident" (except for scissors :P). This is a very important point. Especially when you go fishing with kids, I'd say you should bring them for sure.
Sunglasses and a cap
When you go fishing, would you wear a cap or a hat? How about sunglasses?
If you say 'NO', then I strongly recommend reconsidering. You should consider wearing a cap (or a hat) and sunglasses to protect yourself and to have a happy fishing life. Especially when you go fishing with kids, please make sure they were it. Fishing sometimes can be a very dangerous activity.
I had an experience when I pulled out the fish, the hook came off, the lure threw out in the air, and hooked my head... But I wear a cap, I was fine... Phew,, A cap saved me.
Sunglasses can protect our eyes from similar incidents. And yes, using polarized sunglasses, we can see what is in the water clearly.
Scissors
Scissors are of course essential tools. The fishing line is not easy to cut. Mono lines can be cut by using teeth, but braided lines can not. Without Scissors, how can we tie a rig?
I do recommend always bringing a small line cutter or spare scissors in the tackle bag just in case you left your primary scissors in your house.
A fishing plier
A fishing plier... This is also a very important tool for fishing. How to remove hooks from fish mouth? When it's a simple single hook, may be easy to remove it with your hands. But when it's a treble hook, make sure to use a fishing plier. Removing treble hooks from the fish going crazy trying to escape can't be easy. In the worst case, the hook stubs your fingers.
And we also can catch fish with poison stings like a stingray. Without a fishing plier, it's very risky trying to remove hooks from such dangerous creatures. Using a long nose plier would be better.
As well as scissors, I'd recommend you bring a spare plier in your tackle bag or car trunk.
Gloves
If you watched a couple of my Youtube videos, you may notice I always wear gloves. Yes, I always take them on when I fish.
The gloves can improve my grip when I need to hold fish. Gloves also can protect my hands from sharp dorsal fins and gill plates. This is one of the reasons but honestly say, it's a small reason.
The biggest reason why I wear gloves is to protect myself from incidents like tumbling down. Once I fell down to the water and got injured. I somehow managed myself got out o the water by holding the rocks. Because I took gloves on, I can hold the rocks tightly. Some of them are covered by moss and have sharp edges. Without gloves, I might have been drowned. The gloves saved me.
I have 2 to 3 sets of gloves always in my car.
